What Is a Power Vent Water Heater?
A power vent water heater uses an electric blower motor to push exhaust gases out through a PVC pipe that exits through a side wall of your home. Unlike standard atmospheric tanks that rely on natural draft up through the roof, power vent units actively force exhaust out horizontally.
The key difference: Power vent units can be installed away from chimneys or roof access because they don't need natural draft. This made them popular in 1988-2005 construction when builders wanted flexible water heater placement and improved energy efficiency.
Why they cost more: Power vent units have electric blower motors, more complex controls, and require electrical connections. The venting system is also more sophisticated than simple metal flue pipes. Both the initial cost and replacement cost are higher than standard atmospheric tanks.
